• Trista and Ryan starred on the first-ever season of The Bachelorette, and are still married to this day, with two children.
Trista and Ryan Sutter captured America’s hearts as the first couple to emerge from The Bachelorette in 2003 — and they’re still going strong all these years later. And they relied on each other on a recent family vacation in Croatia, when Trista suffered a health scare that changed everything.
Ryan revealed that Trista unexpectedly suffered a violent seizure while on a shuttle bus and was hospitalized. “In almost 17 years as a firefighter, my experience has trained me to address the immediate emergency,” Ryan wrote on Instagram. “However, little in my 42 years of life prepared me for the confusion and contemplation that remains after the tide of immediacy has settled.”
Trista also posted about the seizure on Instagram. She wrote that she fell on her daughter’s chest and “started turning blue.” Trista wrote about how the incident reminded her of her own mortality. “I’ve never been perfect and I never will be, but from here on out, I vow to try my best to live this life to the fullest,” she wrote. “Thank you to my family, especially [Ryan]. Without you, I don’t know that I would be here today. You are my everything and I love you forevermore.”
After recovering, Trista posted more photos, explaining how grateful she is to have her family with her. (According to People, they have two children, 9-year-old Max and 8-year-old Blakesley.) She even called Ryan her “knight in shining armor.”
